Proper Wash Techniques & Products to Maintain Your Ceramic Protection
The Recommended Way To Maintain Your Vehicle
At Horizon Detail, we’ve seen far too many vehicles lose their luster simply from being washed the wrong way. This guide covers basic care tips to help you keep your vehicle looking its best — while protecting the ceramic coating, sealant, or wax you’ve invested in. Whether your car has been ceramic coated, polished, or simply hand-waxed, these tips apply.
We’ll walk you through proper hand wash technique, common pitfalls to avoid, and how to use the right products the right way.
Hand Washing Your Vehicle (Without Causing Damage)
Even the best protection won’t prevent damage if your wash process is flawed. Proper hand washing reduces the risk of micro-marring — the tiny scratches that dull your finish over time.
Here’s what we recommend:
- Use a two-bucket wash system — one for your soapy solution, one for rinsing your wash mitt.
- Add grit guards to the bottom of both buckets. They help trap dirt and keep it off your mitt.
- Use a clean, high-quality microfiber wash mitt — and wash it after every use.
- Only use a pH-neutral car shampoo. It cleans well without degrading your ceramic or sealant protection.
- Always pre-rinse your vehicle thoroughly to remove loose dirt before touching the paint.
- Wash top to bottom, saving the lower half and wheels for last — or use a separate mitt for wheels.
- Use long, even strokes (not circles) when washing to minimize swirl marks.
- Rinse thoroughly, including mirrors, badges, trim edges, and other crevices.
- Dry with high-quality microfiber towels or a forced-air dryer.
- Use a ceramic-based quick detailer as a drying aid to reduce streaking and add a light protective boost.
Want to go the extra mile? Open the doors, hood, and trunk to wipe down the jambs. A few minutes here goes a long way in keeping things clean and finished-looking.
What If You Can’t Hand Wash?
Hand washing is always best. But life happens — winter, time, location.
If you can’t hand wash:
- Use a touchless car wash to rinse off salt, road grime, and dust.
- Avoid tunnel washes with brushes or soft-touch rollers at all costs. They may seem convenient, but they often leave deep swirl marks that require machine polishing to remove.
- USE CARE if you decide to use a hand-wash style car wash. While on the surface they appear to be a better alternative to automated washes, a lot of the time we have seen that they are some of the worst culprits as they use old, damaged wash mits and towels, and simply don’t have the training and insight into proper vehicle paint and surface maintenance.
Products That Make Maintenance Easier
You don’t need a shelf full of products to keep your vehicle clean — just the right few. Here are the core categories we use every day in-house and recommend to our clients:
- pH-Neutral Car Shampoo
- Safe for ceramic coatings, waxes, and sealants.
- Highly concentrated = cost-effective.
- Doesn’t leave residue or strip protection.
- Ceramic-Based Quick Detailer (QD)
- Use as a drying aid to reduce friction, prevent streaks, and add shine.
- Great for light dust cleanups between washes.
- Can be layered for additional short-term protection (1–3 months).
- Ceramic Sealant Spray
- More durable than a QD — can last 4–6+ months.
- Easy spray-and-wipe application.
- Boosts gloss, slickness, and hydrophobic behavior between full coatings.
All of these products are available from various trusted brands — we’re happy to point you in the right direction depending on your vehicle’s finish and what type of protection you currently have. Just send us a message and we’ll help you figure out what’s best for your setup.
