The “Ceramic Coating Is Too Expensive” Argument

The True Cost and Value of Professional Ceramic Coatings

Investing in a true professional-grade ceramic coating can carry a larger upfront cost than some expect. For others, considering what it protects, it’s a minor line item. Value is relative, but the tangible protection a high-grade coating offers is universal.

Entry-level professional coating packages typically start around $1,000. Considering the average price of a new vehicle sits near $50,000, a high-tier 3- to 5-year coating represents roughly 2% to 3% of the vehicle’s overall purchase price.

Why Modern Clear Coats Need Protection

Modern automotive manufacturing relies on water-borne clear coats. While environmentally friendly, these factory finishes are significantly thinner and softer than those of previous decades:

  • Contaminant Absorption: Softer clear coats act like a sponge for environmental fallout, industrial dust, rail dust, and acid rain. Ceramic coatings form an impenetrable barrier over the paint to lock these elements out.
  • Oxidation and Staining: Thinner paint means less room for error. Once staining or oxidation penetrates a thin factory coat, correcting it becomes difficult—or impossible—without burning through the finish. Upfront protection prevents damage before it occurs.

Overcoming Misconceptions: Price vs. Process

Hesitation over pricing often stems from a lack of clarity regarding what professional detailing actually entails. A true ceramic application is not a quick car wash followed by a spray-on wax. It is a multi-day precision process designed to restore and lock in clarity.

  • New Vehicles Need Work Too: Transport via rail, cargo ship, and holding lots leaves new paint covered in embedded iron and transport haze. Paint also cures while sitting, creating a microscopic film that dulls reflection.
  • Surface Preparation: Proper paint correction removes factory haze and exposes fresh bonding sites on the paint. Without deep decontamination and polishing, a coating cannot properly adhere.
  • Labor and Materials: A proper installation takes 2 to 3 days of intensive labor. Premium, high-solids chemical coatings and specialized surface-bonding preparation systems ensure maximum longevity and performance that basic off-the-shelf products cannot duplicate.

Protecting a vehicle’s finish at the start preserves its aesthetic appeal, simplifies ongoing maintenance, and prevents costly paint correction down the road.

Now Let’s Do The Math

Our ceramic coatings are priced on vehicle size. We have two options, most older cars go with the option that includes our two step correction, most new vehicles go with the option that includes the single step correction. For arguments sake, we’ll assume a small SUV sized style vehicle, prices fluctuate a couple of hundred dollars, sedans slightly less, over sized vehicles a little more. Give us a call for a no hassle, straight forward quote.

3 year coating option, small SUV, single step $1200, $400 per year. $1.10 per day.

5 year coating option, small SUV, single step $1600, $320 per year. .88c per day.

8 year coating option, small SUV, single step $2100, $263 per year. .72c per day.

Most folks will go spend $7 bucks a day on coffee or energy drinks and think nothing of it.

Upfront Cost vs Rear View Money

While there may be a higher upfront cost associate with ceramic coating services, the truth is, over time, they cost less than trying to wax it 3-4 times a year. Your vehicle also looks far better thanks to the paint correction. Is also far easier to clean thanks to the smooth paint from the paint correction. We’re protecting more surfaces, longer with ceramic coatings. Plus we also offer plenty of maintenance and coating repair services, so if you’re ever in a bind or need a refresh, we got you. No other shop in the area is doing what we’re doing with coatings. Give us a shout and find out what becoming a ceramic coating client of Horizon Detail means for you!
