How Often Should I Have My Vehicle Detailed?
How often you should detail your vehicle depends!
It’s one of the most common questions we get:
“How often should I have my vehicle detailed?”
And like most good questions, the answer is: it depends.
There’s no one-size-fits-all schedule for detailing. How often you should have your vehicle detailed depends on a number of factors — how you use your vehicle, where you park it, what kind of protection it has, and how particular you are about the way it looks and feels.
Still, there are some general guidelines that can help.
The Daily Driver Rule: Detail Every 4–6 Months
If your vehicle is a daily driver — especially one exposed to Midwest weather swings, road salt, bugs, tree sap, and bird droppings — you’ll likely benefit from a full detail every 4 to 6 months. That’s often enough to stay ahead of surface contamination and help preserve your vehicle’s value and finish.
If that sounds excessive, consider this: regular detailing isn’t just about appearances. It’s about protecting your investment. Your paint, trim, glass, wheels, and interior materials are all under constant attack. Neglect gives that damage time to set in.
If You Have a Ceramic Coating…
If your vehicle is ceramic coated — especially by Horizon Detail — your detailing frequency changes. Coatings don’t make your car maintenance-free, but they do dramatically reduce the effort and frequency needed to maintain it.
In most cases:
- Quarterly coating maintenance is a good rhythm, with a light detail, decontamination, and inspection.
- Once-a-year full detail is recommended for deeper cleaning and polishing if needed.
That said, we offer coating maintenance services specifically tailored to preserve your gloss, slickness, and hydrophobic performance.
Specialty Vehicles & Garaged Cars
For garage queens, motorcycles, show cars, or rarely driven vehicles, a full detail once or twice a year may be all you need. These vehicles tend to live pampered lives, but even they collect dust, contaminants, and subtle wear that should be corrected periodically.
What About Interior Detailing?
Interior wear is about use, not just time. Families with kids, pet owners, commuters, and those who eat or transport equipment inside the vehicle tend to need interior detailing more frequently.
We generally recommend:
- Interior touch-up every 2–3 months (especially if the vehicle sees heavy use)
- Full interior detail 2–4 times a year, depending on conditions
Our Recommendation? Let’s Match the Service to the Vehicle.
Some clients come in monthly. Some quarterly. Some twice a year.
