When the Teacher Becomes the Detailer: We’re Not Just Certified to Install Ceramic Coatings, We’re Certified to Teach Ceramic Coatings Too!
In the detailing world, there’s a big difference between knowing how to apply a product and knowing how that product actually works.
Most people don’t know that I didn’t start by just opening a shop and hanging a sign. I started by getting under the hood of the industry itself, traveling the country, working with manufacturers, and eventually training other professionals on how to further master their craft.
A Skeptic in a World of Big Promises
When I first got into ceramic coatings over a decade ago, I was a skeptic. The industry was (and still is) full of brands making wild, unrealistic promises. Many brands try to “handcuff” detailers with massive buy-ins, forcing them to sell rebranded, mediocre formulas just to break even and recoup their initial costs.
I wasn’t interested in that.
That search led me to meeting and working with the founders of IGL Coatings USA. They weren’t your typical automotive industry types. They were outsiders who prioritized being upfront and keeping claims realistic over the usual marketing fluff we’d hear from others. They gave me the freedom to test things out myself, to see what actually worked. That moment changed everything for Horizon Detail.
From the IGL Mentor Team to National Training
My obsession with the “how” and “why” didn’t go unnoticed. I was invited to join the IGL Mentor Team, where I spent years traveling the US, teaching other shop owners:
- Advanced Paint Correction: How to safely level clear coats to a mirror finish.
- Sanding Techniques: The high-stakes art of removing deep defects.
- Troubleshooting: Solving the problems that make other detailers quit.
Eventually, this passion led me to co-found Certified Professional Detailers. Our goal was simple: to raise the bar for the entire industry by focusing on honesty, integrity, and technical skill.
